Committed to protect Indian users, says WhatsApp on snooping row
"We agree with the government of India. It's critical that together we do all we can to protect users from hackers attempting to weaken security. WhatsApp remains committed to the protection of all user messages through the product we provide," the company spokesperson said in a statement.

Govt is committed to right to privacy of people: Prasad on snooping row
The matter came to light on Thursday after the social networking giant Facebook filed a lawsuit against Israeli cyber surveillance firm NSO Group of using WhatsApp to spread its Pegasus spyware to 1,400 mobile devices in 20 countries during April-May, 2019. Some Indian journalists and human rights activists are also among those globally spied upon.

As Facebook-owned WhatsApp sued Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO Group this week that exploited its video calling system to snoop on 1,400 selected users globally, details emerged on Thursday that there were "insignificant number" of Indian human rights activists and journalists among those who were targeted.
