Republic Day 2021: Paddler Mouma Das, six others awarded Padma Shri
Singh is an Asian champion in the discipline and has won two gold and four silver medals at various editions of Asian Games and the continental championships. Nambiar, renowned for being Usha's coach, is a 1985 Dronacharya awardee. Virender is a bronze medal-winning wrestler in the 1992 World Wrestling Championship at Cali, Colombia. Venkatesh was a para athlete who has his name in the Limca Book of Records for winning the highest number of medals in the World Dwarf Games, 2005.

However, in men's 3000m steeplechase, Naveen Kumar, a bronze medallist in 2014 Asian Games, and Durga Das Budha finished a disappointing seventh and eighth in 9:02.95 and 9:04.05 respectively.

Indian athletics contingent's middle and long distance coach Nikolai Snesarev was "detained" for half a day and later released by the police after a lady doctor at the Games Village of the Rio Olympics made a complaint of misbehaviour at the polyclinic here.
