US Senators welcome India's decision to invite Australia for Malabar exercises
Senators in the joint letter said, "We write in strong support of India’s decision to formally invite Australia to participate in the annual Exercise Malabar." They added, "Almost three decades ago, the Malabar Exercise acted as a launching pad for increased US-Indian relations. We hope that Japan’s inclusion in the exercise, and now Australia’s, will have a similar effect, strengthening cooperation among the Quad as we collectively defend our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific." Malabar annual naval exercise started as a bilateral India-US exercise in 1992 and Japan also joined in 2015.

A milestone, says Australia on its participation in Malabar naval exercises
A joint release by the Australian foreign and defence ministries said, "It will bolster the ability of India, Australia, Japan and the United States to work together to uphold peace and stability across our region." The invitation for participation in the exercises was sent by New Delhi to Canberra recently. Australia last participated in exercises in 2007 and this will be after over a decade it will be back in the exercises which is bound to irk China.

Australian Navy to join annual Malabar exercises alongside India, US, Japan
The Indian defence ministry said, "Participants of Exercise Malabar 2020 are engaging to enhance safety and security in the maritime domain." They added, "They collectively support free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and remain committed to a rules-based international order." The announcement comes weeks after Quad country foreign ministers met in person in Tokyo.

"What the Malabar exercise symbolizes is India's becoming a full-fledged military partner of the US strategy in Asia which is directed towards containing China," said an editorial in the CPI-M journal People's Democracy.

`India should be vigilant about joining anti-China camp`
Asserting that the Sino-India relationship is on a sound track, the Chinese media on Wednesday asked India to be vigilant to the efforts to rope it into anti-China camp in the backdrop of Japan joining the Malabar naval exercises.
