But one lesser-known facet beyond the enviable success rate of this rocket is its second-stage engine - Vikas. Nambi Narayanan, who led a team to build the engine had secretly kept in mind that this name would be a tribute to ISRO’s founder.

“I pay more than Rs 4 crore in taxes, you can assume that my money, paid as tax, is being used for the space programme,” Dr Vikram Sarabhai had reportedly said. Sarabhai was among India’s top scientists, institution-builders and industrialists and said it half-jokingly in the 1960s. This was during the initial phases of discussion pertaining to the budget of the Indian Space Programme.
