Maharashtra: An atmosphere of concern due to COVID-19 Delta Plus variant, 5 cases found in the same society

Recently, the cases of coronavirus delta plus type in Maharashtra have risen to 103 after 27 new infections were reported in the state. According to the Maharashtra Health Department, six each have been reported in Gadchiroli and Amravati, five in Nagpur, four in Ahmednagar, three in Yavatmal, two in Nashik and one in Bhandara district.

Centre confirmed 51 cases across 12 states of Delta Plus variant, labelled variant of concern, have been found in India. "For the Delta variant, Covaxin is effective but antibody response is slightly reduced to three-fold reduction, and for Covishield, it is two-fold reduction," Bhargava said. The B.1.617.2 Plus or Delta Plus variant has increased transmissibility, stronger binding to receptors of lung cells and potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response.

"After the death of the Madurai patient, the samples were collected, which confirmed that it was 'Delta Plus' variant," Minister for Medical and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian said. On Friday, the Centre informed that 51 cases of the Delta Plus variant of coronavirus have been detected in 45,000 samples sequenced so far in the country.
