Why is the world's highest Atal Tunnel built at 10,000 feet special?

A record 6,400 vehicles passed through the Atal Tunnel, an all-weather road under the 13,058 feet high Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh, on Sunday. A few days after the ban on tourist activities was lifted, there has been a huge increase in the number of tourists. At 9.02 km long, at an altitude of 10,000 feet, it is the longest tunnel in the world.

First Indian Army convoy passes through newly-inaugurated Atal Tunnel: Watch

The first convoy of the Indian Army on Wednesday passed through the newly-inaugurated Atal Tunnel near Manali in Himachal Pradesh. In a video tweeted by news agency ANI, a convoy of the Army can be seen taking the route via the tunnel. The tunnel helps in saving four to five hours of travel time and 46 kilometres distance Manali and Leh in the union territory of Ladakh.

Fine for over speeding, unnecessary stops, outrageous driving in Atal Tunnel

The official notification by the Kullu DM Richa Sharma said, "A large number of public gathering and some incidents of nuisance viz. over speeding, unnecessary stoppage, outrageous driving etc. was brought in the notice which needs immediate action for public safety." In view of such incidents, Sharma said that unnecessary stoppage, over speeding (more than the speed limit mentioned in signboards), rash driving, wrong overtaking etc inside the tunnel shall be strictly prohibited and strict action shall be initiated under the new Motor Vehicle Act, 2019 for any violation.

Atal Tunnel witnesses three accidents within 24 hours of inauguration

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a wing of the Defence Ministry that excavated the tunnel at an altitude of 3,000 m or 10,000 feet with sheer hard work and determination in a decade, on Monday blamed the local authorities for not deploying the police to monitor the movement of motorists. However, with the raising of serious objections by the BRO, the state government has now deployed the police after 48 hours. BRO Chief Engineer KP Purushothaman said that an official communication to provide forces to regulate the movement of the traffic was sent to the Chief Minister`s Office on July 3 and to the local administration on October 3.
