Pro-Tamil activist, who attacked Narayanan, remanded to 15-day judicial custody

A pro-Tamil activist who hurled a slipper at former NSA M K Narayanan has been remanded to 15 days' judicial custody.

Chennai: A pro-Tamil activist who hurled a slipper at former National Security Advisor M K Narayanan has been remanded to 15 days' judicial custody, police said on Thursday.

Prabhakaran (35), a native of Aranthangi in Puthukottai district was produced before a magistrate last night after he was arrested for hurling a slipper at the former West Bengal Governor at the end of a programme held here to discuss the future of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in India.

He was later lodged in Puzhal prison here.

According to police, the accused person's grandparents had moved from Sri Lanka and settled in Tamil Nadu in the 1970s.

"Prabhakaran doesn't seem to be member of any particular movement or organisation but is a sympathiser of Sri Lankan Tamil cause," a senior police official said, adding he had participated in many pro-Tamil protests.

Last night, Prabhakaran had flung the footwear at Narayanan after the function and reportedly raised slogans against him.

The octogenarian former NSA escaped without any injuries.

Pro-Tamil outfits accuse the then Congress government of aiding the Mahinda Rajapakse dispensation in Sri Lanka in 2009 during its final assault on rebel LTTE which had witnessed severe civilian Tamil casualty.

Narayanan was India's NSA then.
