RAIPUR: In an initiative to empower them economically, women in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur are being trained in producing Tasar Silk.

"Earlier we used to sit at home after working in fields. Now we work here and earn 6000-7000 per month and lead a better life," a trainee Sunita Paikaray said.

The scheme, known as Mukhyamantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, has made both the women and farmers self-reliant.

"I earn Rs 7000 per month by training these women at the centre here. This has not only improved my living conditions but also made me self-reliant," the trainer Deepa Paikaray said.

BP Vishwas, the silk department deputy director said, "The atmosphere here is suitable for Tasar cocoon. Initially, we selected 100 women for this but extended it to 290 women later who were trained under Mukhyamantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. We plan to extend it to 1,000 individuals in 2017-18."

"Jashpur is swiftly emerging as one of the leading districts in the state. This project is becoming a noble method for economic empowerment of women. We are developing a brand 'Jash Udyam' which will be offered on sale through online platforms," District Collector Priyanka Shukla said.
