'We provide scholarships to deserving NEET commandos along…', says Dr Geetendra Singh

In India, the right to education is a fundamental right. The right states that every Indian citizen between the age of 6 to 14 years should get free and compulsory education. It also ensures that every Indian citizen should get an education for up to 14 years without discrimination, but we all are very well aware of what the real world offers. The country's literacy rate stands at 77%; the percentage in urban regions is 87.7%, whereas, in rural India, it is just 73.5%. The portion of rural India is knee-high though nearly 65.53% of the population of India resides in the rural regions. Numerous causes dwell behind the substantial gap between the urban and rural education system and the literacy rate.

Observing these issues, renowned doctor Geetendra Singh intended to be of any help to the impoverished section of society. Simultaneously, being from the health care sector, he wanted to bring a change and improve the condition of the industry in India. Amalgamating his dreams for a new India, he started coaching NEET aspirants with minimal charges. Soon he realised the need to shift it to the online platform for providing easy access to people. So, in 2017, he set up the online coaching institute ‘Biomentors’ to help students from all spheres of life. Till now, the platform has taught countless NEET aspirants with a record of 11,000+ selections in government medical colleges.

Dr. Geetendra Singh answers a few questions related to the evolution in the education sector and how Biomentors are contributing towards the same.

1. With the advancement of cutting-edge technology, what technologies do you use to smooth the learning process?

The most transformative field of technology in the world is Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the education sector is no exception. With AI-based learning, we have stepped into the digitised world, which has greatly improved our students' learning abilities. It recommends to students their most ready-to-learn topic to master based on the outcome of the knowledge check. Alike initial check, if a student answers correctly, the student promotes them in their learning of the subject, and if a student answers incorrectly, the AI-enabled software comes up with a hint. Apart from tracking their progress, it motivates the students to push the limits beyond their comfort zone.

2. While heading towards your aspiration to bring a change to society, what are the roadblocks that came in your way?

Working towards bringing change to something that has existed for a long time is indeed challenging. It was never a bed of roses but a bed full of thorns. Being a bootstrapped company, We reinvest our profit into the well-being of students and cutting-edge technologies. There were times when we planned our expansion or tried to bring innovation to projects, but due to a lack of sponsors, we had to halt. The biggest challenge that we face is fund management, though being a non-profit company, we pay all our employees based on market cost. The other challenge we encounter is the increasing cost of technology due to inflation. We have students from different parts of the country, especially from West Bengal, who work in the farmlands and pay the minimal fee we charge. If we had received funds for the same, we could have made progress in the field.

3. To help the underprivileged students, what are the other benefits you provide besides the minimal coaching fees?

The very foundation of our NEET coaching institute is to provide quality education to the people who deserve but can't afford it. The minimal cost we charge is being used for the benefit of the students. However, we do understand some students can't afford these charges. We not only make the coaching classes accessible for them but also pay their medical college fees. Through our scholarship program, we try to help as many students as possible, and till now, we have assisted around 70 students. In the near future, we aspire to provide scholarships to many more deserving candidates, and watching them touch the sky of their dreams is our fee. We provide scholarships to the deserving NEET commandos along with AI-based learning nurturing young talent.

4. The healthcare sector in India is adversely affected, what are your plans to bring a change?

India's health care sector has been battling several issues, including the low number of institutions and less than adequate human resources. Despite the modest increase in budget outlays over the last year, the country spends one of the weakest on the health care sector, around 1.1% of its GDP. We, through our coaching, not only provide knowledge to the students to crack the entrance exam but also make them understand the responsibility of being a doctor. We want our upcoming generation of doctors to be an inspiration for the world.

5. What is the one piece of advice that you want to share with aspiring medical students?

As I always say, being a doctor is the greatest blessing to humanity, but at the same time, it is not a comfortable job. People should stay without leisure and lured and be selfless in the service of humankind. The absolute first and the last event of a human are both certified by doctors, be it in maternity hospitals or morgue. A doctor is a person with extensive knowledge in the health care sector who applies and dedicates his expertise to identify the medical problem faced by the patient and uses his skill to prevent or cure it. I want to tell all aspiring doctors to recognize the most significant responsibility they are about to get and be sincere with their passion for being a doctor.
