ALIGARH: The election results for the student body of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have on Monday been declared.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani has been named the president of the students' union.
A resident of Bihar, Usmani, told ANI, "At present, the situation of the country we are dealing with, we are standing together to fight in a democratic way."
The vice president's post has been grabbed by a Kashmiri student, Sajad Subhan Rather. Rather is a History PhD student.
"We will create pressure on the government by raising voice on the issue of mob lynching. My success is not merely mine but it is the success of all the students of AMU. I want to see each and every citizen to reach new heights in their lives," Rather said.
Mohammad Fahad, an Agro-business student, has been elected to the secretary's post.
It was a tripartite battle for the post of president between BDS student Mashkur Ahmed Usmani, research student Abu Bakr and BALLB student Ajay Singh, who is the grandson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Thakur Dalveer Singh. Mashkur hails from Bihar while Abu Bakr is from Azamgarh.
The contenders for the vice president posts were M Com student Faisal Nadim, PhD student Vaseel K, M Tech student Rao Faraz Varis, MFC student Vikrant Johari and PhD students Sajjad Subhaan Rather and Ejaz Ahmed.
Of the total electorate of 18,188, as many as 5005 belonged to the engineering faculty while 3196 were from the social science department.
