Record crowd spurs pulsating Big Bash League's Melbourne derby

New Delhi: New Delhi: In a sporting country like Australia, breaking crowd records seems ordinary. But obliterating the previous record by a whopping 28,250 is mind-blowing.

On Saturday, the Big Bash League's Melbourne derby between Stars and Renegades at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground witnessed a record 80,883 attending the T20 match.

Besides, chaotic scenes were reported with some 20,000 fans still queued up outside the ground when the game began.

It could well be a new world record for any domestic cricket game. But, it sure put to shame the the figure set on Day One of the Boxing Day Test this summer.

Stars won the match by seven wickets with five deliveries left. And the star of the match was England batsman Luke Wright, who pummeled Renegades bowlers in his 63-ball innings of 109 not out.

West Indies' big hitters Chris Gayle and Dwyane Bravo failed to reach double figures and Renegades could managed only 161 in the board.

The world record for biggest cricket crowd at international level was also set at the same venue, last year, when Australia defeat New Zealand in the World Cup final. The match was attended by 93,013, which battered the previous record of 91,092 on day one of the fourth Ashes Test in December 2016 at the same venue.

The 1992 World Cup final between England and Pakistan also witnessed then a world record 87,812.

However, legends have it that the old Eden Gardens in Kolkata believed to have recorded more than 100,000 fans on each of the first four days of the India-Pakistan Test in 1989. But there was no official record of the count.
