Is Kane Williamson set to step up as NZ captain with Brendon McCullum's retirement?

New Delhi: As New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum decided to retire in February from all forms of cricket, speculations are high that classy Kane Williamson would be his successor.

Former New Zealand great Daniel Vettori also feels that Williamson should take over the charge from inspirational skipper McCullum.

"Knowing the inner machinations of the team, (McCullum) will feel that Kane is ready to step up into the role," Vettori was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

The former spinner backed his idea by adding that: "He's (Williamson) got good leaders around him, like Tim Southee, so I think the team is in good hands. If Kane feels like it's the right time to step in and take over that mantle then he'll do a wonderful job," the former spinner added.

Williamson, who has been going through a purple patch with the willow, recently slammed his fifth Test century of 2015 in the second Test against Sri Lanka, to reach the zenith of the ICC Test batting rankings.
