Chennai: Seems, the tentacles of law choose to torment the downtrodden over the mighty. At a time when business tycoon Vijay Mallya, who owes nearly a billion dollars to banks, fled the country to evade the law of the land, a poor farmer in Tamil Nadu was compelled to end his life over non-payment of dues.
As per ANI, a farmer in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu committed suicide on Friday after his tractor was impounded by a private financing agency for non-payment of dues.
It is nothing new that a farmer has committed suicide for failing to pay his debts. This is the grim reality of agriculture sector in India.
A few days back, a farmer, who owes Rs 1.3 lakh to a bank for a loan he took for a tractor, was beaten black and blue by the police and loan recovery agents in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district.
The whole act was caught on camera. The video showed the farmer, G Balan, being assaulted.
"We borrowed Rs. 3.4 lakh in 2011 and have already paid Rs. 4.1 lakhs including interest. Due to a failed crop we couldn't pay the pending last two instalments. Vijay Mallaya owes hundreds of crore, he's let off. We poor farmers are harassed,” his wife, B Keerthana was quoted as saying by NDTV.
