Over 400 organ donors registered during a campaign

Over 400 people, including teenagers, have registered to donate their organs during a campaign organised here by a city-based hospital.

New Delhi: Over 400 people, including teenagers, have registered to donate their organs during a campaign organised here by a city-based hospital.

Under the campaign on organ donation (CORD) which was kicked off in June, the organ donors and the hospital authorities have also urged the Government to incorporate organ donation in their school curriculum.

"We have successfully registered 460 organ donors during our campaign. Meeting our first objective of registering an average of 3 donors per day has been met. This symbolises a significant change towards greater understanding and acceptance of organ donation amongst the masses of Delhi NCR," said Himanshi Chawla, programme lead of CORD and a senior authority at Saroj Super Specialty Hospital.

She said that in the second quarter they will focus on spreading awareness in schools, colleges, universities, corporate, PSU's etc through extensive use of conventional and social media, community mobilisation and participatory social movements.

She was speaking at an conference held to announce the number of registrations done during the campaign.

P.K.Bhardwaj, medical director of Saroj Super Specialty Hospital said, "The need for organ donors has never been greater; virtually anyone can become a donor. Donor's medical condition determines what organs and tissues can be donated for transplant. One organ donor can save up to eight lives."
