New Delhi: On the ocassion of World Wildlife Day, it is essential to make people aware about the diversity of plants and wildlife in the world. “The future of wildlife is in our hands” being the theme this year has proven absolutely right as the future actually lies in our hands. One of the main reasons for this is believed to be poaching which is actually pushing animals to the verge of extinction.

According to the United Nations, this illegal wildlife trade is the main reason that has dragged thousands of animals to extinction. Animals of various species are hunted down mercilessly with traps, bullets and what not. This trade has even increased the demand for products with animal parts like rhino horns, pangolin skin, elephant tusks among others.

In the last four decades, nearly 50% of the wildlife has been wiped off because of poaching only in India. The main reason behind India turning into a hub for this illegal trade is lack of strict punishments and a not so strong law enforcement mechanism. We need to understand that poaching does not only affect the animals but it has a drastic affect on the entire ecosystem.

So, we should start conserving and protecting biodiversity on our planet before its too late.
