Nirbhaya rape case: `Juvenile rapist no more in Delhi`

New Delhi: The juvenile convicted for the 2012 Delhi gang-rape, along with five other men, is presently being sheltered outside Delhi, a report said on Tuesday.

According to The Quint, the juvenile, who was out of the correctional home on Sunday, was shifted to an NGO from the observation home on December 09.

He was later shifted outside Delhi, in a branch of an NGO based in the national capital.

A Delhi government officer says the juvenile was shifted for security reasons.

Meanwhile, the counsellor of the observation home said the convict feared his safety. He said that his family will accept him but not society, said the counsellor.

The juvenile, who was under 18 years of age when he was held with five other men for the brutal rape and murder of the paramedical student on December 16, 2012, was tried under the Juvenile Justice Act. He was put in a remand home for three years, the maximum permissible under the legal provisions.

Of the six, one was found dead in Tihar Jail. A trial court had awarded death penalty to the other four rapists which was upheld by the high court. Their appeals are pending before the Supreme Court.
