Either PM should act or give us control over Delhi Police: Kejriwal on gang-rapes

New Delhi: A day after two minors were gang-raped in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of interfering in Delhi government's functioning.

“Lieutenant Governor (Najeeb Jung) and Delhi Police have just one job left - to interfere in our work. They should instead be worrying about security of women,” Kejriwal said after visiting one of the victims at a hospital here.

“Delhi Police is under Central government so the PM should answer on this,” the AAP leader said, reacting to questions on the gang-rapes.

“Police does not come under Delhi government. Modi ji has kept the police with him and doesn't do anything,” he said further, ruing the fact that his government has no control over the police.

“PM Modi should either himself act or give control over Delhi Police and public order to the elected government of Delhi,” Kejriwal said, and urged the PM to “take some time out, meet the LG and find out ways to deal with crimes against women in Delhi”.

Kejriwal said if his government fails to improve the law and order situation in Delhi after it is given control over the police, the Centre can always revert to the existing arangement.

“PM sir, give control of Delhi Police to Delhi government for one year. If the situation does not improve, (you can) take it back,” he said.

Kejriwal also slammed the LG and said, “I am ready to co-operate with the LG, please ask the LG the same question”.

“I am seeking time to meet the LG and PM to discuss women safety in Delhi,” he added.

“Police has a huge role in this. They have to create an environment of security in the city. The PM has to intervene personally,” the CM said.

While stating that both the minors are out of danger, Kejriwal cautioned: “But if we all don't work together to deal with such incidents, it will be very problematic.”

“It's a really sad state of affairs that little girls are being subjected to such crimes, we will do whatever is necessary,” he said further.
