Brain dead Jaipur man gifts new life to four others

Jaipur: Rupesh, a 40-year-old, who was declared brain dead following a road accident six days ago, gave a new lease of life to four people through cadaver transplant after his family donated her vital organs on Saturday. His two kidneys were transplanted to individual patients admitted at the SMS Hospital, liver was transplanted to a patient in Medanta NIMS Hospital and his heart was transplanted to a patient in Delhi.
Rupesh was a resident of Jagdamba colony in Dehar ka Balaji area of Jaipur. On December 3, while driving a car with his relative Praveen, he was on the way to Bassi. At the highway another car rammed into their car and after it lost control, it got hit at the median. Seriously injured Rupesh was rushed to SMS Hospital where he was admitted in ICU at trauma centre. Despite medical treatment, board of doctors declared him as brain dead on Thursday.
After counseling efforts by volunteers of MFJCF Navjeevan, an NGO working to create awareness about organ donation, and Dr DS Meena, superintendent of SMS Hospital, family members of Rupesh agreed for organ donation and his liver, heart and the pair of kidneys were harvested in SMS Hospital.
“Kidneys were transplanted to two recipients in SMS Hospital while heart, after creating green corridorwas sent to Max Hospital, Saket in Delhi.” Dr Meena told DNA.
“After creating a semi green corridor, his liver was sent to Medanta NIMS hospital, Delhi Road where it was transplanted to a patient,” Dr Meena added.
“After a 5-hour-long surgery, we successfully performed the cadaver liver transplant at the hospital. Condition of the recipient patient is good and he has been kept in ICU. We will keep him under observation for next few days to avoid any kind of infection,” said Dr Ankur Atal Gupta, specialist at Medanta NIMS Liver Transplant Center.
