Uttarakhand Transport Minister Yashpal Arya and his son Sanjiv Arya on Monday resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress party in New Delhi. The former BJP leaders were inducted into the party in the presence of senior party leader Harish Rawat and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary KC Venugopal.

This comes months ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in the state. Notably, both the leaders, Yashpal and Sanjiv had joined BJP ahead of the 2017 assembly polls in Uttarakhand after quitting Congress.

In a bid to ensure qualitative assistance in legal aid matters, the Supreme Court has issued directions asking the State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs) to send complete records of the cases in digital form as and when sought.

A bench of Justices Uday Umesh Lalit and S Ravindra Bhat passed the directions while dealing with a case in which amicus curiae was not provided with the record in a criminal matter including the depositions of witnesses by the Rajasthan SLSA.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday recorded the statement of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot`s brother Agrasen Gehlot in connection with alleged irregularities in the export of fertiliser. In the first round of questioning that lasted more than two hours, the ED recorded Agrasen Gehlot`s statement in the case based on his replies to the queries sought by the investigators. 

Amid the ongoing state bandh in protest against the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that claimed the lives of eight people including four farmers, Maharashtra Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jayant Patil on Monday said that the people of Maharashtra are supporting the bandh called by the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Patil also alleged that BJP is `anti-farmer` and wants to crush them.

"People are supporting the bandh. No action has been taken against the Union minister and his son who were involved in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. BJP is anti-farmer and wants to crush them," he said.

President Ram Nath Kovind in consultation with the Chief Justice of India Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana on Monday has approved the transfer of seven high court judges to different high courts in the country, said the Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday gifted Indian epics and classics to the Manas-Mahatma Gandhi library at Chingiz Aitmatov National Academy in Bishkek. Jaishankar is visiting Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev.

"Very pleased to gift Indian epics and classics to the Manas-Mahatma Gandhi library in Bishkek. Applaud the leadership of Professor Turgunaliev in strengthening our cultural cooperation," the external affairs minister said in a tweet.

The Delhi government has to depend on costly gas-based power as well as spot purchase at high market rate as the NTPC has halved power supply to the city from the usual 4000 MW, Delhi Power Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday.

Most of the National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC) plants are running at 55 percent capacity as their coal stocks are enough for one-two days, he claimed. Delhi purchases most of its power from NTPC but supply has been halved, Jain told reporters. "NTPC which supplies us 4000 MW power has reduced it to half currently. This has led us to generation of power through gas that costs Rs 17.25 per unit," he said.

A special court here Monday directed the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to file its reply on October 13 to a bail plea filed by Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, arrested in connection with the seizure of banned drugs on board a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast.

Special Judge V V Patil, hearing matters related to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, said it would hear the bail plea on Wednesday (October 13). Aryan Khan was arrested on October 3. He is currently in judicial custody and lodged at the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai. (PTI)

A wagon of an empty goods train derailed near Dahanu Road station in Maharashtra's Palghar district near here on Monday morning, a Western Railway official said. There was no casualty and train services on the route's main line were unaffected, he said.

The Dahanu Road station, about 120 km from here, is located on the Mumbai-Surat-Delhi trunk route and several long distance trains, including the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express, pass through the route daily.

"There is coal shortage in most of the power plants. The stock is left for only 2-3 days. NTPC capped production capacity of its plants to 55%. Earlier we used to get 4000 megawatts of electricity but now we are not getting even half of that," said Delhi Power Minister, Satyendar Jain.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid respect to the `great visionary` Nanaji Deshmukh on his 105th birth anniversary and said that Deshmukh dedicated his life to rural development.

Sharing a speech he delivered in 2017 at the birth centenary celebration of Nanaji Deshmukh at IARI in New Delhi, PM Modi said, "Pranams to the great visionary, Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh on his Jayanti. He dedicated himself towards the development of our villages and empowering the industrious farmers."

The farmers' agitation will continue till all demands are met, including repealing of the three farm laws and legal guarantee on minimum support price for crops, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait has said. Talking to reporters in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district on Sunday evening, he said that the Centre is overlooking "the one-year long agitation of farmers in which 750 farmers have died".

Security has been beefed up outside Sessions Court in Lakhimpur Kheri where Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra`s son Ashish Mishra, an accused in the violence case, will be produced by police today.

Ashish was arrested on October 9 after 12 hours of interrogation by the Crime Branch of Uttar Pradesh police in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) were closed in Mumbai on Monday after incidents of stone pelting at some places here in the wake of the Maharashtra bandh called by three ruling parties in the state to protest the killing of four farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district, officials said.

Nine buses, including one hired on lease, were damaged in areas like Dharavi, Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar, Charkop, Oshiwara, Deonar and near Inorbit Mall here early morning, said a statement issued by BEST, which is the transport undertaking of the city civic body. "The BEST administration has called for police protection and buses will be operated from all depots after reviewing the situation," the statement said. (ANI)

Eighteen Samajwadi Party (SP) workers, most of them students, have been booked for an attempt to murder charge and 16 of them have been sent to jail after they allegedly attacked and injured a policeman who stopped them from burning the effigy of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Apart from section 307 (attempt to murder), the protesters were also booked under 15 more IPC sections, including rioting and unlawful gathering, despite prohibitory orders.

The Uttar Pradesh government will convene a special one-day session of the Legislative Assembly on October 18. The joint session of the members of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council is a part of "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations. The special session will run for only one day.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had passed a resolution in the cabinet. Following this, Governor Anandiben Patel gave her consent.

A gunfight has started between the terrorists and security forces in the Hajin area of Jammu and Kashmir`s Bandipora district, officials said on Monday. "Encounter has started at Gundjahangir, Hajin area of Bandipora. Police and Security Forces are on the job," police said.

The gunfight took place after a joint team of the police and the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about the presence of terrorists.

A massive fire broke out at a godown stocked with paper rolls in northeast Delhi's Harsh Vihar area early Monday, officials said. No casualties have been reported.

According to fire officials, they received information regarding the blaze at 3.36 am and 17 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The Chinese Army has not agreed to the constructive suggestions given by the Indian Army to resolve the remaining friction points or areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and that is why the 13th round of talks concluded without any results, the Indian Army said in a statement on Monday.

During the meeting, the Indian side made constructive suggestions for resolving the remaining areas but the Chinese side was not agreeable and also could not provide any forward-looking proposals. "The meeting thus did not result in resolution of the remaining areas," the Army said, in its statement on the 13th round of corps commander level talks held in Moldo on the Chinese side of the LAC on Sunday.

Government is likely to make a big announcement on free power supply in the meeting, in addition to several important other decisions. 

Aryan Khan's bail plea is to be heard in Mumbai sessions court at 11 am on Monday. So far 20 arrests have been made in the Mumbai drug case, including 2 foreign nationals.
