HMPV Virus Cases in India Live Updates: Amid heightened surveillance in India, Gujarat reported another case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), raising further concerns about the virus’s spread. A 10-month-old child in Assam and A 9-month-old baby in Ahmedabad have tested positive for HMPV, increasing the total number of cases of the respiratory illness to 15.

Meanwhile, China has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring respiratory diseases, including HMPV, and remains in close communication with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the government prioritizes the health of its citizens. He clarified that HMPV is not a new virus, having circulated among humans for over 60 years.

Guo dismissed sensationalist descriptions of the virus, emphasizing, "HMPV infections manifest itself as a self-limiting disease." He added, "It is alarmist to exaggerate common viruses as unknown viruses, which goes against scientific common sense."

Former AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria said “HMPV is not novel, it’s an old virus. It has been there for some time. Viruses usually cause mild illness, but in extremes of age, in infants and young children and the elderly or those with comorbidities, it can cause pneumonia, in young and old, which can lead to breathing issues, as well as hospitalisation.”

Union Health Minister JP Nadda said, "Health experts have clarified that #HMPV is not a new virus. There is no reason to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation."

According to health experts, even though there is no vaccine for HMPV, a regular flu shot or three doses of Covid vaccine makes one immune against it.

HMPV Cases in India Live: 'HMPV Has Evolved And Been Present In India For Years,' Says New Study

A recent study by researchers from JIPMER-Puducherry, a leading national institute and tertiary care hospital, has revealed that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is known to cause respiratory issues in children, has not only been circulating in India for years but has also evolved. The virus is classified into two main genotypes, A and B, with subgroups such as A1, A2, B1, and B2, along with additional sub-clusters like A2a, A2b, and A2c.

For the first time, JIPMER researchers have identified two new HMPV sub-clusters — A2.2.1 and A2.2.2 — within the A genotype in India. These newly identified strains show similarities to isolates detected in the United States in 2010 and Japan in 2018.

Encouragingly, the study, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID), confirms that these genetic changes have not significantly affected the virus’s transmission patterns or the severity of the symptoms it causes.

HMPV Cases In India: No Need To Panic As J’khand Still Unaffected By Virus, Says Health Minister

Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari on Tuesday said the state has been unaffected by the human metapneumovirus infection, and there is no need to panic over the detection of such cases in other parts of the country.

Ansari said he is closely monitoring the situation.

“The infection of HMPV has been reported in parts of the country but there is no impact in Jharkhand. I have been closely monitoring the situation. There is no need to panic as no cases of the HMPV infection have so far been reported in the state,” Ansari told reporters at Congress headquarters here.

Human metapneumovirus is one of the many respiratory viruses that can cause infections in people of all ages, particularly during the winter and early spring months.

The infection is usually a mild and self-limiting condition and most cases recover on their own, according to doctors.

The Centre has advised states to step up surveillance for respiratory illnesses, including ILI and SARI, and spread awareness about the prevention of transmission of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) after five cases were detected in India.

Ansari said they were waiting for the Centre’s guidelines on the prevention of infection.

“I have asked the health secretary to hold a discussion with all civil surgeons and issue a guideline so that they could follow,” he said.

The minister said Jharkhand is on alert mode and it has all the required resources to deal with any situation.

He also asked the civil surgeons to ensure the availability of doctors, beds and medicines in hospitals.

"I have instructed officials to ensure that cases of severe acute respiratory illness are examined in the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory," Ansari said in an advisory.

HMPV Cases LIVE: States Ramp Up Surveillance, Doctors Say 'No Need To Panic'

Amid growing concern about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country, states have intensified their health measures, focusing on surveillance and prevention to address the challenge. In Nagpur, two suspected HMPV patients have been identified. Notably, five cases of HMPV have been reported in the country, with two cases in Bengaluru, one in Ahmedabad, and two suspected cases in Nagpur.

Dr Pinaki R Debnath, HoD, Pediatric Surgery, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital told ANI that the HMPV existed earlier and it erupted now because of some reasons like cold. "Human Metapneumovirus is not a new virus, it is an old virus. It existed earlier too. It erupted right now because of some reasons like cold. This happens in cold. This is a respiratory RNA virus; it infects the respiratory system...A viral infection spreads more when immunity is lowered or among the extremes of age. Those above 60-65 years of age or those below five years of age have a low body immunity. If the body's immunity is low, virus spread is more. That is why, it can be seen among children," he said.

"Its symptoms include respiratory infection - like nasal blockage, runny nose, red eyes, and scratchy throat. If it is severe, there will be pneumonia-like symptoms, when there is respiratory distress. Otherwise, there will be normal symptoms like cold and cough...Its impact stays for 2-7 days and it gets cured automatically within that period. There is no anti-viral drug for it. So, how we can prevent it - mask up if you are going to a crowded area, if there is someone who is already infected maintain distance from them and do not shake hands with them, wash your hands and observe cough/sneezing etiquette. This will help prevent it," Dr R Debnath said.
