Delhi MCD Election Result 2022: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday (December 7, 2022) ended the Bharatiya Janata Party's 15-year rule at the Delhi municipal corporation with the final results putting the party's overall tally at 134. As per the State Election Commission figures, the BJP, which exit polls predicted would suffer a massive defeat, has won 104 seats. The Congress could only manage to get nine seats. Three Independent candidates, including Shakeela Begum from Seelampur in northeast Delhi, have also won.

The counting of votes began at 8 am, and initial trends put the BJP ahead of Kejriwal's party by a significant margin, but the pendulum swung in the AAP's favour as the counting progressed.

This was the first election after the MCD was reunified earlier this year.

Earlier in the 2017 civic polls in Delhi, the BJP had clinched 181 of the then 270 municipal wards while AAP had won only 48 and the Congress finished third with 30.

MCD election results 2022: BJP's vote share rises despite defeat

Even though the BJP lost the MCD polls to the AAP in a close contest, it managed to raise its vote share by 3 per cent as compared to the 2017 civic body elections in the national capital.

The vote share of the ruling party in Delhi also soared from 21.09 per cent in 2017 municipal polls to 42.05 per cent, as per figures of the State Election Commission.

The BJP which had won 181 of the 272 wards in 2017 managed to win only 104 wards this time surrendering its 15-year rule at the civic body to Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP.

The saffron party obtained 39.09 per cent of the total votes polled in the elections for 250 wards. In 2017 municipal polls, the party had secured 36.08 per cent votes.

An analysis of vote share of different contestants showed that the Congress which had obtained 21.09 per cent votes in 2017 could manage to get only 11.68 per cent votes this time.

Also, the vote share of Independent candidates slid to 3.46 per cent as compared to 8.8 per cent in 2017 civic body polls, suggesting that the votes of Congress and Independents shifted to the AAP and BJP.

The increased vote share of the AAP shoot up its seat tally to 134 from 48 it had won in the 2017 civic body polls.

MCD poll results very crucial for Arvind Kejriwal, his AAP

These MCD poll results are very crucial for Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP as they are seeking an expansion ahead of the 2024 General elections. A victory in these municipal body elections will not just cement AAP's place in Delhi but will also fuel its aspiration to emerge as a serious contender to the BJP and PM Narendra Modi on the national scene.

Several exit polls have predicted a clear win for the Aam Aadmi Party in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls and an end to the BJP's 15-year rule at the civic body.

MCD mandate will show AAP is a fiercely-honest party, says Manish Sisodia

Ahead of the announcement of election results for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday said that this mandate will be a signal from Delhi to the whole country that the Aam Aadmi Party is a "fiercely-honest party".

"This mandate will be a signal from Delhi to the whole country that AAP is a fiercely-honest party. The BJP levelled fake allegations against me, and ran a witch-hunt against Satyendar Jain. But the people of Delhi have proven with their mandate that there was no scam in Delhi and all the allegations levelled by the BJP were false, motivated by conspiracy and dirty politics," Sisodia said.

He also added that the people of Delhi will reject the BJP`s lies, conspiracy and dishonesty, and choose CM Arvind Kejriwal`s honesty and work-based politics.

"The BJP roped in many of its Chief Ministers and Union ministers to campaign against the AAP in the run-up to the MCD polls, but the public did not fall for its traps and completely rejected BJP`s politics of dishonesty," Sisodia said.

With the exit polls on Monday showing that Arvind Kejriwal's AAP was going to sweep the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls by winning more than 150 of the 250 municipal wards, party leader Durgesh Pathak said that they are expecting "better" results than what exit polls predicted.

"We are expecting better results than what the exit polls predicted. These exit polls also show that people have rejected all the allegations leveled by the BJP (against AAP) and have voted for good work," Pathak, AAP's MCD poll in-charge, told news agency PTI.

Exit polls will be proven wrong, we will return to rule MCD, says BJP

Ahead of the counting of votes for the MCD polls on Wednesday, the BJP has exuded hope that the tide will turn in its favour.

"We have hope that the results will prove the exit polls wrong and the BJP will return back to rule the MCD. However, we will accept whatever the results are," Delhi BJP general secretary Dinesh Pratap Singh said.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said it would be too early to give in to the survey predictions.

"Wait till tomorrow. I am very hopeful that our results will be far better," he said.

The defeat in the MCD polls will dent the saffron party's expectations to weaken the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP's political dominance in Delhi and further diminish its chances in the 2025 Assembly elections.
