An unidentified terrorist was killed in an overnight gunfight with a joint team of security forces in the Dachigam area of Harwan in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
A top police officer told Zee News that acting on specific intelligence, the Jammu and Kashmir police, together with security forces, launched a cordon and search operation in the Dachigam area late on Monday evening.
During the search operation, the hiding terrorists opened fire on the forces, resulting in a firefight between the terrorists and the joint forces.
Earlier, on November 10, a brief encounter took place between terrorists and security forces in the Zabarwan Hills in Ishbar Nishat, but the terrorists managed to escape.
Since then, continuous search operations have been carried out in the Zabarwan Hills, connecting Tral in South Kashmir, Ganderbal in Central Kashmir and Bandipora in North Kashmir. Late last night, contact was re-established between the terrorists and security forces, and in the initial exchange of fire, one terrorist was killed.
Another terrorist is believed to be hiding. The identity of the killed terrorist is being ascertained. The area is still cordoned off, and a massive search operation is ongoing in the forested areas.
Massive counter-terrorism operations were launched in Kashmir in November after terrorists carried out attacks in Gagangir and Gulmarg, and hurled grenades at TRC Chowk.
On November 23, security forces, in a joint operation with Baramulla Police, busted a terrorist hideout in the Kunjar area of Baramulla district. During the search, arms and ammunition were recovered, and the hideout was destroyed.

The troops observed suspicious movement and, when challenged, the terrorists started indiscriminate firing. The troops retaliated effectively, neutralizing one terrorist.
On November 8, a joint counter-terrorism operation was launched by the police and security forces in the Panipora area of Sopore, Baramulla, based on specific intelligence about terrorist presence. During the search operation, two terrorists were neutralised in an encounter with security forces.
On November 6, security forces neutralised two terrorists in two counter-terrorism operations in the Bandipora and Kupwara districts of North Kashmir.
Anti-terror operations are launched wherever the security forces receive actionable intelligence. In November, security forces killed eight terrorists in the Kashmir Valley, and as December began, one more terrorist was killed.
