Law and order situation worsening in Himachal Pradesh: BJP MP Anurag Thakur

Due to the failure of government and police in handling the Shimla case, the public has lost faith in the state machinery and is resorting to protests.

Dharamshala: BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Tuesday accused the Himachal Pradesh government for the "worsening" law and order condition in the state.

His remarks comes against the backdrop of the alleged sexual harassment of a schoolgirl in Chamba district that saw a situation of unrest in the area.

"It is extremely unfortunate to witness the current law and order situation in the state. The number of rape cases has risen exponentially and situation is alarming for girls and women at large," Thakur said in a release here.

The recent schoolgirl rape and murder case in Shimla followed by the case in Chamba has left the public in "dismay" with the state government, he said.

Due to the failure of government and police in handling the Shimla case, the public has lost faith in the state machinery and is resorting to protests, the BJP leader claimed.

"The chief minister was supposed to visit Tissa in Chamba yesterday, but due to the unrest, he canceled his visit," he said.

This only goes to show the poor situation of law and order in the state, Thakur said.

"This extreme failure of the state government is encouraging the corrupt as they think they can get away with any crime as state is unable to act swiftly and effectively, he said.

However, the Himachal Pradesh government today said after a meeting of a peace committee, the issue in Chamba has been resolved.

Deputy Commissioner Chamba Sudesh Mokhta said, "A peace march was also taken out."
