Did Eman's sister ignore doctors' advice? Cops called in after Shaimaa feeds world's heaviest woman water

New Delhi: The controversy surrounding Eman Ahmed's weight loss took another ugly turn on Thursday after the police were called to the hospital.

As per the reports in mid-day, the Saifee hospital where Eman is being treated called on the cops after her sister Shaimaa tried to feed a few drops of water to the Egyptian woman, despite warning from doctors who said it can prove fatal.

Since Eman's throat is paralysed, unsupervised feeding could cause water to go into her lungs, something thiat is risky for her. Shaimaa, on the other hand, denied being warn of this.

“On April 11, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala sent me a text message saying that he gave chocolates to Eman and that made her happy. So, when Eman was asking for water today, I gave her a few drops of it. But I didn't know it would lead to so much trouble,” Shaimaa was quoted as saying to mid-day.

The report adds that Huzefa Shehabi, the COO of Saifee Hospital, then wrote about the incident to the Egyptian consulate, asking them to request Shaimaa to follow the doctors' orders, as violation can prove fatal.

“Eman can't drink water as she could aspirate and the water could go to her lungs. When I requested her not to feed her water, she called me crazy. She became very abusive,” said Shehabi, who came to Eman's room to speak to Shaimaa on being informed by the guards.

“If anything happens to Eman while she is staying in India, it would affect the image of the Indian medical fraternity. So, we have to be very careful,” added Shehabi.

The report further claims that one police officer might be installed near her room to stop such incidents in future.

Eman, who was the world's heaviest woman until she arrived in Mumbai over two months ago for her bariatric surgery, is likely to be shifted to Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi for further treatment in the first week of May.

“As the treatment here concludes, Eman is being shifted to Burjeel Hospital in UAE (a hospital initially introduced to the family by Dr Muffazal Lakdawala). Secondary physiotherapy will continue over there as it is closer to home for Eman and her family,” said a statement issued by said Dr Aparna Bhaskar, section chief of bariatric surgery at Saifee Hospital.

The move came amid allegations by her sister Shaimaa that she was not receiving proper treatment at Saifee hospital, adding that doctors were lying about her weight loss and recovery.

Eman was brought to Mumbai by a special cargo aircraft and admitted to the private hospital on February 11.

Eman who weighed 500kg plus underwent a bariatric surgery on March 7, in which doctors had claimed to have reduced her stomach size by two- third, so as to reduce the food intake.

The hospital also claimed that Eman now weighs 176 kg.
