Lives of hundreds of people traveling on the hijacked flight were at stake. Brave-heart Neerja, who was the chief flight purser of the flight, saved the lives of a number of passengers by risking her own life. She was killed in the shootout following the hijack at Karachi International Airport on September 5, 1986.

Neerja was posthumously conferred the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, in 1987, making her the youngest and first woman recipient of the medal.

‘Neerja’ directed by Ram Madhvani marks the acting debut of music composer Shekhar Ravjiani and also features Shabana Azmi.
