New Delhi: In a move that could take thousands of air travellers on a 'happy journey', air tickets for journeys up to 1 hour flight could be charged just Rs 2,500 only.

The government on Tuesday informed that Lok Sabha that there was a proposal to charge just Rs 2,500 per ticket for air travels up to one-hour flight.

"The Ministry will commence the process of consultations with stakeholders, including airlines, to explore possibilities ... Of containing fares," Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said while replying to a debate on Demand for Grants for the Ministries of Civil Aviation and Tourism which was approved by the House later.

The government also said it will hold consultations with the airlines to explore the possibility of curbing the menace of charging exorbitant airfares during emergency situations.

According to PTI, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma informed that there is a proposal to ensure that only Rs 2,500 per ticket is charge for one-hour flights.

He also informed that the government was working on strengthening regional air connectivity.

Last year in October, unveiling the much anticipated draft civil aviation policy, the government had informed that there is a proposal to cap fare at Rs 2,500 for one-hour flight under regional connectivity scheme.
